Caro Ruiz is a patient advocate with Umbra Health Advocacy who specializes in health insurance. Over more than 20 years inside the health insurance industry, she held leadership roles at some of the largest health plans in Massachusetts, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Tufts Health Plan, and Point32Health. Today, she uses that insider knowledge to help individuals and families understand their coverage and get the care they are entitled to. Caro serves clients in English and Spanish.

“I have spent most of my career inside the health insurance system. I have supported teams in claims, provider networks, regulatory compliance, and benefits design across Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial plans. As a result, I know how health insurance actually works, and where it tends to fail the people it is supposed to serve.

That knowledge is what led me to patient advocacy. I started this work with a simple belief: no one should face the healthcare system alone. Because so many people do, especially in diverse and underserved communities, I made it my mission to be the person who bridges the gap between patients, providers, and insurers.

Her work spanned Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial coverage, and she supported teams in claims processing, provider networks, regulatory compliance, and benefits design.

Because she has seen how plans actually make their decisions, Caro knows where to push when something goes wrong.
