Meet Karen Green-Heyward, Patient Advocate

Karen Green-Heyward, patient advocate

Some of the hardest moments in health care are not medical. They are the moments when you sit in a room, hear a lot of words, and have no idea what to do next.

Karen Green-Heyward works in those moments. She is a Strategic Advocacy Consultant and Patient Advocate with Umbra Health Advocacy. She helps clients, caregivers, and families find clarity when a health situation feels complex or overwhelming.

Karen brings more than 25 years of experience in office administration, IT systems, and project management. That background shapes how she works. She is calm, organized, and steady. She takes a situation that feels like chaos and turns it into a clear plan with real next steps.

She has completed patient advocacy training through Umbra Health Advocacy. She also completed hospice-focused volunteer training with AccentCare Hospice, including end-of-life care foundations, grief and loss, and culturally informed care.

Why Karen Green-Heyward Became a Patient Advocate

Karen came to advocacy the way many advocates do. She lived it first.

She spent more than six years advocating for her sister across multiple long-term care and skilled nursing facilities. She sat in the meetings. She asked the questions. She learned how confusing and isolating health care decisions can feel when no one is guiding you.

That experience taught her two things. First, families notice when something is wrong, even when they cannot name it yet. Second, nobody should have to figure it out alone.

“If something doesn’t feel right, trust that instinct and look a little deeper,” Karen says.

She now brings that same attention to her clients. Her goal is simple. She wants every person she works with to feel heard, informed, and supported.

How Karen Green-Heyward Helps Clients

Karen helps clients through Umbra Health Advocacy. Her work covers the practical parts of care that families often carry alone.

She helps with:

  • Care coordination across providers and facilities
  • Communication with doctors, nurses, and care teams
  • Preparation for appointments, including what to ask and what to bring
  • Understanding treatment options so clients can weigh real choices
  • Organizing medical information into one clear record
  • Finding resources that support informed decision-making

Karen is especially strong with long-term care and skilled nursing situations. She knows who does what inside a facility. She knows which staff member can answer which question. And she knows how to document a concern so it gets taken seriously.

“Documentation creates a clear timeline and helps identify patterns if problems continue,” she says.

She also pays close attention to the small things families see during a visit.

“When you visit, don’t just focus on your parent. Pay attention to the overall environment,” Karen says. “Those small moments can tell you a lot about the quality of care.”

Consistency is another signal she watches. “Consistency matters because quality care is built on relationships.”

And she pushes families to ask about independence, not just safety. “Families should feel comfortable asking questions about mobility plans, physical therapy involvement, walking programs, and what steps are being taken to maintain the resident’s highest safe level of independence.”
